HOT SPRINGS – Hot Springs, the renowned Veterans town, is getting ready to rumble with its own rally and races to kick off the Black Hills Motor Classic. Most Black Hills communities are taking advantage of the spillover of riders throughout the region with biker-friendly activities. This series of events is becoming the premiere bike event in the Southern Hills.
Hot Springs events begin on Saturday, August 1, with a dance to celebrate American patriotism. From World War II to Iraq and back, music has been the mainstay of troops stationed everywhere. The dance will be at the American Legion from 8pm to 11pm, with music from the collection of a Vietnam Vet.
On Sunday, August 2, the 7th annual Fall River Freedom Ride takes place, the proceeds of which benefit the Michael J. Fitzmaurice South Dakota State Veterans Home. Last year’s run, with over 100 bikes, netted the winner a $600 prize. This year is expected to be even bigger. The theme is “Vets Don’t Forget,” and T-shirts will be sold sporting this slogan and advertising Hot Springs as “The Veterans Town.”
Registration for the poker run begins at 10:00 a.m. Sunday, August 2, at the State Veterans Home, 2500 Minnekahta Avenue. The run commences at 11:00 a.m. with a flag parade through town, lead by a military escort. Registration fees of $20 for the first hand and $10 for the second poker hand include a US flag for the first 150 bikes. The parade is an event itself that the public will not want to miss.
Following the poker run, motorcycle drag races (no entry fee) will thunder Centennial Park starting at 7:00 p.m. Thanks to the Southern Hills Drag Racing Association, the races will be conducted on Monday and Tuesday, August 3 and 4 as well, also at 7:00 p.m. At 9pm on Sunday through Tuesday nights, a free dance featuring the music of Meng Dynasty will be in the outdoor venue of Centennial Park.
